Getting Started

Swimming is an important life skill, and learning to swim can help build confidence and develop essential water-safety skills. At Hudson Valley Swim®, our mission is Empowering Safe Swimmers for Life!®

According to the CDC, thousands of people in the United States die from drowning each year, and young children are especially vulnerable. Drowning can happen quickly and silently, which is why learning how to be safer in and around the water is so important.

Our swim lessons help swimmers of all ages develop swimming skills, water-safety awareness, survival skills, and confidence in and around the water. However, swim lessons are only one layer of water safety and should be combined with active supervision, appropriate barriers, life jackets when needed, and other water-safety practices.
Hudson Valley Swim offers swim lessons for infants as young as 4 months through adults!

Our programs are designed for all ages and stages of swimming development.
Hudson Valley Swim offers swim lessons for infants through adults, with programs designed for different ages, abilities, and swimming goals!
We offer programs for:
  • Infant & Toddler
  • Elementary
  • Youth
  • Teen & Adult
  • PREPARE 4â„¢ Competition Clinics
  • Private Swim Lessons
  • Adaptive Swim Lessons
Programs and availability may vary by location.
Our swim programs are primarily organized by age, with instruction based on each swimmer's current skills and experience.

While our Infant & Toddler program is organized by age, the Elementary, Youth, and Teen & Adult programs are divided into skill-based levels — Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.

Swimmers progress to the next level as they develop their swimming skills and meet the requirements for advancement.
The right swim lesson depends on factors such as age, swimming experience, current skills, and individual needs.

Our Level Finder can help identify the best starting level. You can also contact your local Hudson Valley Swim location for guidance.
That's completely okay! Hudson Valley Swim welcomes first-time swimmers of all ages, including swimmers who may be nervous or uncomfortable in the water.

Our instructors meet each swimmer where they are and work at their pace to build comfort, confidence, and foundational swimming skills before progressing to more advanced instruction.

Private and Adaptive Swim Lessons are also available for swimmers who may benefit from more individualized instruction.

During the first lesson, instructors get to know the swimmer, observe their current skills and comfort level in the water, and begin introducing appropriate skills.

Some swimmers are ready to jump right in, while others may need a little more time to warm up. Our instructors meet each swimmer where they are and build from there.
We do our best to provide consistency whenever possible, and many swimmers will have the same instructor for their lessons.

However, instructor schedules and availability can vary, so a substitute instructor may occasionally teach a class.

Regardless of the instructor, all teachers follow Hudson Valley Swim's established curriculum and teaching methods to provide a consistent learning experience.
Every swimmer is different, so there isn't a specific number of lessons that guarantees when a swimmer will learn to swim.

Progress depends on factors such as age, previous water experience, comfort level, consistency, practice, and individual development.

Consistent lessons are important because swimming skills develop through practice and repetition. The most important thing is progress—not a timeline.
We recommend coming prepared with:
  • Towel: All swimmers should bring a towel.
  • Swim Cap: Required for swimmers with long hair or hair that needs to be secured.
  • Goggles: Required for swimmers ages 3 and older. We recommend goggles with clear lenses for good visibility.
  • Pool Deck Footwear: Flip-flops, Crocs, or other clean footwear are recommended for walking around the pool deck.
  • Proper Swim Attire: Anyone entering the pool must wear a family-friendly swimsuit or swim trunks. Outdoor clothing is not permitted in the pool. Rash guards are permitted.
  • Swim Diapers: Children under 3 must wear two swim diapers—a disposable swim diaper underneath a reusable swim diaper. Swimmers who are not fully toilet trained must also wear swim diapers.
